"It is our goal to make the new cathedral a gathering place for Catholics and other people of faith," Brown said in a statement posted online. "By asking for naming suggestions we begin the process of connecting this wonderful structure and its future to our faith and the larger community."
Brown said the new name should "refer to the nature and person of Christ or to his activities as illustrated by the gospels."
The deadline for suggestions is Feb. 20. Brown will review the ideas and announce his choice sometime later.
But there's no rush.
Although the diocese now owns the property, the church won't officially turn Catholic for several years. As part of the purchase deal, the Crystal Cathedral's current congregation can continue using the church for three years. After that, the diocese will redesign and tweak the building before converting it to Catholicism.
