License Plate Reader Leads To Fremont Grand Theft Arrest: Police
Police say two suspects stole $5,000 worth of purses in an organized retail theft at a Fremont store.

FREMONT, CA — Richard Lee, 57, of Oakland, was arrested for a grand theft that occurred in Fremont on Feb. 27. The CHP located the suspect vehicle in Oakland after a license plate reader camera alerted police about his location.
The theft happened at around 9:30 p.m. When officers arrived at the store the suspects had already fled. Officers were told that two suspects cut security wires and stole over twenty purses valued at over five thousand dollars.
The suspect vehicle was captured on Fremont's community camera system. Investigators were able to identify Lee as one of the suspects. Fremont detectives entered his car’s license plate into a police database as a felony vehicle, and an arrest warrant was obtained for Lee for Penal Code 487 – Grand theft.
The CHP tried to stop the car after the alert from the license plate reader the vehicle initially fled. The CHP continued the pursuit and the car pulled over.
The driver, Lee, was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail.
