Glendora Man Charged In Fatal Shooting Of Covina Good Samaritan

GLENDORA, CA — A Glendora man was charged Monday in connection to the fatal shooting of a good Samaritan who attempted to stop a fight in Covina.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office charged Trevor Howard Thompson, 34, with one felony count each of murder, attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic weapon, attempted carjacking, second-degree burglary of a car, resisting a police officer, vandalism and possession of a gun by a felon.

Thompson remains in custody on $2 million bail, according to the L.A. County Sheriff's Department. His next court appearance is Tuesday for an arraignment hearing.

He is accused of shooting Joey Manuel Casias, a 38-year-old father of three, on Dec. 21 in Covina.

Residents of a Covina neighborhood confronted Thompson for reportedly breaking into a BMW, according to the district attorney's office. He then allegedly attempted to carjack a resident's car before attacking a man on the street.

Casias attempted to stop the fight, but Thompson began shooting from a handgun he had on him, the district attorney's office said. One of the bullets fatally struck Casias, and he died in the 1800 block of East Covina Blvd.

Thompson was arrested the next day after an hours-long standoff with the Covina Police Department, authorities said.

"This is an especially heartbreaking incident since Mr. Casias was simply acting as a good Samaritan," District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement. "As we seek to ensure accountability, we also will make every possible service available to the victims and their families.
