LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CA -- A Los Angeles County man was shot and killed by police late Sunday night after holding his baby hostage for more than seven hours. The standoff, which began shortly before 3 p.m., ended around 10:30 p.m. when police shot the man and snatched the baby from the car, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The 22-year-old man, who was believed to be armed with a knife, held his 7-month-old baby hostage at Wingate Park in the 700 block of North Glendora Avenue in Covina. The man threatened to hurt himself as officers surrounded the car, Covina police said.

The incident reportedly began when a couple began arguing inside their car. An officer in the area ordered the woman to exit the car, but the man refused, according to The San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

"Officers shocked the suspect with a Taser, but it failed to subdue him and he managed to pull the device’s conductive darts from his body," the newspaper reported.
