New Pedestrian Bridge Installed On Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail

The new aluminum bridge over Arroyo de en Medio replaces the deteriorating structure that was closed in July 2020.

HALF MOON BAY, CA — Contractors on Thursday finished installing a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists along the Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail, marking a major milestone in a project that began nearly three years ago.

The San Mateo County Department of Public Works closed the old bridge in July 2020 citing severe rusting and poor structural conditions, opening a detour route along the Highway 1 shoulder the following September. Contractors began work to remove the old bridge last summer and finished restoring the beach area by December.

Winter storms and aluminum shortages delayed the new bridge's installation until this spring.

Contractors delivered the two bridge segments to Mirada Road in April, which required an 80-ton crane to install over Arroyo de en Medio. The bridge was successfully placed Thursday, but trail users will have to wait a little longer to use it.

Crews will build a new stairwell down to the beach next month, and construction gear will remain in the area until new paving, fencing and railings are complete. Public Works will announce an opening date soon.
