County Rain Advisory for the Beach in Effect

As Hermosa Beach and the rest of Southern California have experienced recent rainfall, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has issued an advisory for residents to avoid certain areas of local surf.

During rain showers, bacteria and debris can often pollute ocean water near storm drains or rivers, causing people swimming in it to get sick.

"Fortunately, discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers only comprises a small portion of the beach, and therefore, anybody who wants to go to the beach will be able to enjoy their outing," said Jonathan E. Fielding, the county's public health director and health officer, in a statement Tuesday.

"We do advise swimmers and surfers to stay away from the storm drains, creeks and rivers as there is the possibility that bacteria or chemicals from debris and trash may contaminate the water near and around these areas, and some individuals may become ill," he continued.

Beach areas that are not near discharging storm drains, creeks, and rivers are exempted from this advisory. The advisory is in effect until at least Friday at 7:30 a.m., and might be extended depending on further rainfall.
