Winter Solstice

Tuesday, Dec. 21, is the Winter Solstice — the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

Officially, the National Weather Service defines the occurrence as the time at which the sun is farthest south in the Southern Hemisphere.

Summer solstice begins June 21, when the night is shortest and the day longest.
