Bicyclist Injured in Crash on Hermosa Avenue

The rider hit a taxicab door as it was opening and was thrown into the air, witnesses say.

A man was injured Saturday afternoon after crashing his bicycle into a taxicab door as it was opening, officials said. The accident happened on the 1000 block of Hermosa Avenue. Passersby said they heard a "loud boom" when the collision occurred.

"The sound was so loud. It was a crashing sound," said Nathan Taylor, who was walking down Hermosa Avenue about noon. "[The cyclist] went flying at least five feet into the air and landed on his shoulder."

Taylor, who was visiting from Las Vegas, said he stopped to help the man up while shoppers, and even some soccer fans watching the World Cup at nearby bars, stood on the sidewalk to watch.

Brittney Dursley, who works at the clothing boutique BKB, said she was helping customers when she heard the crash. Next thing she knew, paramedics were bringing the injured cyclist into her store to get him away from the sidewalk commotion.

"I thought he was unconscious, but he was able to talk and knew where he was," Dursley said. "We've seen a lot of accidents around here, especially during holidays like the Fourth of July, but never someone so badly hurt."
