2 Teens Charged In Assault Of 56-Year-Old In Hermosa Beach

Additional charges may be forthcoming, pending police investigation.

HERMOSA BEACH, CA — Two teenagers arrested in connection with a violent attack that rattled the South Bay have been charged, Hermosa Beach police announced.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against two teens, Hermosa Beach Police Chief Landon Phillips announced at a Tuesday city council meeting, The Los Angeles Times first reported.

Due to a court order, Phillips said he was not able to provide further details about the teenagers' charges.

Several teenagers assaulted a 56-year-old Hermosa Beach man at about 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 21, near 11th Court and Beach Drive, a short distance from The Strand, police said.

Multiple surveillance videos that captured the incident show a man being attacked by a group of people in an alley, FOX 11 News reported. The group then fled on e-bikes, the TV station reported.

“We know the videos circulating are disturbing,” police said.

In videos of the incident, Phillips said that some of “the juveniles can be seen kicking” the man in the head before he falls unconscious.

Through an investigation, police initially said they identified five teenagers, between the ages of 13 and 15, involved in the incident.

Phillips said there have now been two more juveniles identified, bringing the total to seven youths.

The two “juveniles identified as primary aggressors in this case” were arrested Nov. 26, police said.

“Those juveniles were transported to Los Padrinos juvenile detention facility,” Phillips said.

About a week after the incident, Principal Matthew D. Horvath confirmed in an email to parents that students from Manhattan Beach Middle School were involved.

“This event has understandably caused concern, anger, and sadness across our community, and I share those feelings,” Horvath said in his letter.

Phillips said the parents of the involved juveniles have all been cooperative.

“They've all been helpful in this investigation,” he said.

An investigation is still ongoing, as detectives continue to conduct interviews, Phillips said.

“When all of the interviews are complete, our detectives will be presenting the entire case to the district attorney's office to determine if any further criminal charges should be filed against anyone else involved,” Phillips said.

In response to the incident, Phillips said police have increased their presence in the downtown and Strand areas.

“In the last week, we've done several operations, and we will continue to do so,” Phillips said.
