Cost Concerns Killed Hermosa Beach's Carbon Neutral Plan

Councilwoman Carolyn Petty said the policy if implemented, will mean that less money will be available for the city's infrastructure needs.

HERMOSA BEACH, CA -- With residents raising concerns about Hermosa Beach's plan to be "carbon neutral" by 2040, city leaders have rolled back the policy, according to the Daily Breeze.

Concern over the plan's cost was first raised by Councilwoman Carolyn Petty in the February edition of her monthly email newsletter, the Daily Breeze reported. Petty said the policy, if implemented, will mean that less money will be available for the city's infrastructure needs.

"Once approved as part of the General Plan, expect that money will go towards green projects and will shift away from infrastructure projects," she wrote.

Kent Allen, a former planning commissioner, said the city has more pressing concerns than carbon neutrality, such as funding the Hermosa Beach Fire Department, the Daily Breeze reported.

While being carbon neutral has been a goal for many years, the plan received more attention as the city is about to finalize its General Plan, according to the Daily Breeze.
