Earth-Friendly Fun for the Family

With Earth Day approaching, here are some local events to celebrate our planet. Plus, join in a community effort to raise money for Japan disaster relief.

From a party at the ocean mural in neighboring Redondo Beach to the weekly farmers market, Hermosa Beach families can celebrate Earth Day (April 22) early. Here are some of the local happenings:

Wyland Wall

The image of a whale calf has been added to in honor of Earth Day and the 20th anniversary of the mural (see accompanying photos). A of the Wyland Wall, named for the artist who created it, will be held Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 655 N Harbor Dr. in Redondo Beach. Hermosans can join in the fun, which will include live music, activities and gourmet food trucks.

Comedy Night: Aid Japan

In partnership with the Hermosa Beach Firefighters Association, the on Hermosa Avenue will host a benefit show Thursday night with headliner Larry Miller to raise funds for relief efforts in Japan. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. All ticket proceeds go to the Firefighters Association's overseas relief efforts. Tickets cost $20.

Farmers Market

Fresh produce and treats can be found weekly at the on Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. at the corner of Valley Drive and 11th Street. By providing a venue for nearby farmers to sell produce here, the local market reduces the journey that food takes to your dinner table—which decreases the amount of pollution that results from packaging and transporting products.
