The World Cup and NBA Finals keep Hermosa Beach sports fans cheering on the pier, and the city retires 48-year teacher.

Art Walk
Local residents toured and created art pieces last weekend near the Hermosa Beach Community Center. The Arts Group of Hermosa Beach sponsored the two-day city art walk, highlighting the work of nearly 100 juried fine artists, including Sylvie Paul. Paul, a 14-year-old Hermosa Beach artist, created the Free Expression Art Booth at the community-wide event.

World Cup
A crowd of more than 100 soccer fans watched the World Cup kick off on a 20-foot outdoor television in the middle of Pier Plaza on Saturday. The city and the Los Angeles Galaxy hosted the community-wide viewing of the tournament's first game, the United States against England, which ended in a 1-1 tie.

National Title
Local Lakers fans watched the NBA Finals unfold at various Pier Plaza sports bars on Thursday. After a suspenseful Game 7, local fans celebrated the victory of the Los Angeles Lakers against the Boston Celtics. Others were left stranded with no way home.
Teacher Retires
Jan Stewart will resign from teaching at Hermosa View Elementary School on Wednesday. School officials have frowned upon Stewart's classroom, cluttered with art supplies and student projects. In an interview with Patch, Stewart argued that her classroom reflects a healthy youth environment.
