Frosted Cupcakery Plans for Hermosa Shop

The Hermosa Beach City Council looks at a certificate of appropriateness for the bakery's proposed alterations to space in the Bijou building.

As Frosted Cupcakery aims to open a Hermosa Beach shop in the Bijou building on Hermosa Avenue, the City Council unanimously decided to allow the bakery to make some changes to for its debut.

The shop plans to remove some nonbearing walls, divide interior space to make room for a kitchen and retail area, recover maroon fabric awnings with brown fabric, and mount a hanging sign (see accompanying city staff report under photo.)

"Any alterations to a historic landmark building in our city requires what is called a 'certificate of appropriateness,'" said Community Development Director Ken Robertson during the council meeting. "The Bijou building is currently the only designated landmark in this city."

The building previously housed a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf, . Now Frosted Cupcakery, which has locations in Hollywood and the Belmont Shore area, plans to open in the vacant space.

"The impact will be minimal," James Dole, a partner at Frosted Cupcakery, told the City Council about the proposed building renovations. "We are excited to be here in Hermosa Beach."

Hermosa Beach resident Judy Garland told the council that she hopes the changes don't harm the Bijou building. "I would hate to see anything more that takes away from our one and only historical landmark," she said.

After looking at a report from the Frosted Cupcakery, City Councilman Jeff Duclos said, "I’m personally thrilled to see what’s happening with this property... a beautiful little bakery."

Frosted Cupcakery bakes fresh cupcakes daily, serving individual treats or a boxed dozen to customers, according to its website.
