Monday Essentials: Oil, Money, Elections, Beach Volleyball, Webcam

Here are five things for your Monday morning in Hermosa Beach:

  1. Tell the city what you want to see analyzed in its upcoming Environmental Impact Report on a proposed oil drilling project from E&B Natural Resources during a public meeting Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Community Center, 710 Pier Avenue. Make your thoughts known. Make your voice count.
  2. You elect them [or you don't] but do you want them speaking for you in the way they have been? The Hermosa Beach City Council last week voted down a proposal to put an increase in the city's occupancy tax to voters after asking city staff to deliver ways to increase city revenue. But you will be asked to vote on whether or not to approve an oil drilling project that could generate revenue for the city. Is this a contradiction? Read about the upcoming November election and put your voice/vote to use: 5 Potential Candidates for City Council Pull Papers.
  3. A part of Hermosa Beach history will shut its doors soon. What will you miss about The Green Store? Story here: Hermosa Beach Landmark, The Green Store, Closes Its Doors.
  4. Did you know there's a webcam that updates its photo about every 30 seconds and makes it available to see online? It's a fun perspective of the beach and pier, taken from the roof area of Poop Deck and The Mermaid, soon to be who knows what, though a hotel is most likely.
  5. Hermosa Beach native Sean Rosenthal is on the sand in Long Beach this week with partner Phil Dalhausser for the FIVB World Series of Beach Volleyball. Rosenthal told the Daily Breeze the 2016 Olympics is the duo's top goal, but right now they want to win the most tournaments they can. General admission to the tournament, which lasts through next weekend, is free. VIP packages, which include courtside seats, lunch and special access, are $50 a day. Call (310) 906-3806 for more information.
