In the midst of a lawsuit, the City posts its employees' salaries and benefits online for all to see.

Local all-stars make their way to the world series, and it's discovered that Hermosa and drinking date back to the Prohibition era.

Shots Fired

Residents on Loma Drive woke up to the sound of gunshots early Tuesday when a fight between four men escalated. A gunman in the group allegedly shot at two other men involved in the argument. No one was hurt, but some bullets struck nearby homes. 

City Sued

Hermosa Beach police and fire unions filed a lawsuit against the City on Tuesday. The groups claimed that the City Council ignored their legal right to negotiations when it voted on changes to retirement benefits at a meeting in July. A court decision on Thursday has allowed the City to continue moving forward with its proposed changes. Another vote on these changes is scheduled for September.

World Series

The Manhattan Beach All-Stars celebrated a victory against Hilo, Hawaii 5-4 on Tuesday, sending them off to the Senior League World Series in Bangor, Maine. Ian McLoughlin delivered a big hit in the bottom of the seventh inning, pushing the team to a win.

Drinking Problem

This two-part video series uncovered when and where liquor policy began to stir the Hermosa Beach community. Alcohol regulation first emerged in town around the Prohibition era. In following years, laws loosened and the city grew as a nightlife destination.

Payday

Hermosa Beach posted employee salaries on its website, making the information easily accessible for residents. The city's top paid employee, City Manager Stephen Burrell, earned $258,283.37 in salary and compensation last year. The second highest paid employee, Fire Capt. James Crawford, earned $229,224.74 with benefits and overtime.
