Fire Dept. Blotter: Structure Fire, Pedestrians Struck in Crosswalk

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics last week responded to a pair of incidents involving pedestrians struck by vehicles while attempting to navigate crosswalks, according to Capt. Tony Navarro.

On Wednesday, Sept. 21, at around 6 p.m. 50-year-old male was struck while crossing at the crosswalk near Ave. 52 and N. Figueroa Street. The man was placed on backboard as a precautionary measure and taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital.

On Thursday, Sept. 22 at around 7 p.m. paramedics transported a 52-year-old woman to Huntington Memorial Hospital after she was hit by a car while passing through the crosswalk at Aldama and Meridian Streets. According to Capt. Navarro, the woman was placed on a backboard as a precautionary measure.

"Our crosswalks aren't really advertised like they are in other parts of the city," Capt. Navarro said. "Most of these accidents occur right around the time that the sun's going down. People need to be extra careful around that time."

LAFD Fire crews on Friday, Sept. 23, at 9 p.m. knocked down a fire that was buring inside a shed on 5628 East Buchanan Street.

According to Navarro, the fire was started accidentally in a shed near the main house and was extinguished by firefighters in about 10 minutes. No injuries were reported.
