Power Outage Update: Who's Got the Juice?

More than 100 LADWP crews were out on the streets attempting to restore power while thousands of Highland Park customers were left in the dark.

A group of neighborhood residents congregated around a row of felled trees on S. Avenue 57 at around noon on Friday afternoon, most of them with the same question on their lips.

"When do you think we'll get power back?"

While Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa urged Angelenos to be patient on Thursday afternoon, saying it would take 24 to 48 hours to restore power, many feared the 25-year old ficus trees that sheared power lines and crushed cars on S. Avenue 57 could leave residents in the dark for at least a week.

Many residents blamed the lack of street services--tree trimming in particular--for the disproportionate number of outages in HLP.

One resident walked away from the devastation on S. Avenue 57, determined to purchase a generator.

Karen Hayes, owner of, said she had intermittent electricity at her studio on N. Figueroa and was concerned that the outages may impact classes scheduled for Friday and Saturday.

Many Highland Park residents near Avenues 57 and 55, where downed trees also knocked down power lines, filled on North Figueroa Street, in hopes of being able to charge their computers and phones. Many of them left the café at around noon when the electrical current to the eatery began to fluctuate.

As of 10 a.m. on Friday morning, LADWP reported that around 67,000 people were still without power.
