HOLLYWOOD, CA — Costume designer Ruth E. Carter will soon be the newest inductee on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Carter, who designed costumes for the 2018 box office hit Black Panther, will receive the 2,684th star on the Walk of Fame during an induction ceremony Thursday at 11:30 a.m.

Carter began her career as an intern in Springfield, Massachusetts. After moving to Los Angeles in 1986, she met director Spike Lee at the Los Angeles Theater Center, who would hire her for his then-upcoming movie School Daze. The two would work closely together on several more projects, such as Do the Right Thing, Jungle Fever, and Chi-Raq.

Carter has earned three Academy Award nominations for Best Costume Design, for Malcolm X, Amistad, and Black Panther. She also received two Critics Choice Awards for Best Costume Design for Black Panther and Dolemite Is My Name, along with an Emmy nomination for "Roots."

Venturing outside of Hollywood, Carter last year teamed up with H&M for a limited-run collaboration inspired by the 90's street culture that was so prevalent in her early movies.

"When I was working on the many Spike Lee films, I got the nickname 'Ruthless' by other key crew who would say, 'Hey Ruthless!'" Carter said at the time of the announcement. "I like to think it's because I worked so hard behind the scenes designing looks and running the streets of New York to gather materials and get hundreds of actors in costume, helping the actors connect to characters through fashion. This collection was created in that spirit and it serves to empower anyone with an inner creative who is passionate about nurturing their voice and determined to share their story - their art."
