Former Child Actress Dead At 24: 'She Seemed Happiest On A Movie Set'

LOS ANGELES — The former child actress Sophie Nyweide died earlier this month, according to her obituary. She was 24.

Born in Burlington, Vermont, Nyweide’s first major job was the title role in the 2006 film “Bella,” according to the Internet Movie Database.

“She dreamed (more like demanded!) to be an actor,” her obituary said. “She seemed happiest on a movie set, becoming someone else.”

Nyweide went on to appear in a 2007 episode of “Law & Order,” as well as in the 2009 film “Mammoth,” with Gael García Bernal and Michelle Williams, and the 2014 movie “Noah,” which starred Jennifer Connelly, Russell Crowe and Emma Watson, according to IMDb. Her last appearance was in a 2015 episode of “What Would You Do?”

Her obituary described her as “a kind and trusting girl” who “wrote and drew voraciously.” In addition to acting, she competed in snowboarding as a child.

“Many of her writings and artwork are roadmaps of her struggles and traumas,” the obituary said. “She self medicated to deal with all the trauma and shame she held inside, and it resulted in her death.”

Nyweide died April 14, according to the obituary, which said she spent most of her life in Vermont and New York City.

“A life ended too soon. May it not be in vain,” her obituary said. “May we all learn from her brief life on earth and do better.”

The obituary requested that in lieu of gifts or flowers, donations be made in Nyweide's name to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network.
