GARCETTI SUPPORTS GREENER BUSINESSES, COMMUNITIES THROUGH CLEAN UP GREEN UP INITIATIVE
L.A. City Councilmember Eric Garcettijoined Los Angeles families in supporting the Clean Up Green Up initiative to strengthen our neighborhoods and businesses.
"This policy is a win-win. It will make people healthier in some of our unhealthiest communities and it will spark growth industries to create the jobs of tomorrow," said Garcetti.
Clean Up Green Up would establish "green zones" in the Boyle Heights, Pacoima and Wilmington neighborhoods, which were selected because of nearby pollution sources that put their residents at higher risk for asthma, lung disease, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. Businesses within these zones would be offered financial and other incentives to help them create jobs by greening their operations. Local residents would benefit not only from the additional jobs, but from reduced pollution.
The motion to establish the Clean Up Green Up program will be heard by the City Council's Planning and Land Use Management Committee before it goes to the full Council for approval. It was authored by Councilmembers Jose Huizar, Richard Alarcon, and Tony Cardenas and former Councilmember Janice Hahn, who is now serving in the U.S. Congress.

GARCETTI HOSTS GOVERNMENT 101 WORKSHOP FOR KOREAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY
Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti hosted a Government 101 workshop for the Korean American community. Government 101 trains local residents to access city resources and become effective advocates for their communities. The morning training included a tutorial on the City of Los Angeles’s legislative process and information on how residents can influence the process.
"This is an opportunity for the community to think about how city government can help them and then learn how to access that assistance," Garcetti told the dozens of participants. "I hope you find this workshop informative and that you stay engaged in local government."
Garcetti created Government 101 after he was elected in 2001 to encourage local residents to engage in city issues and give them an opportunity to learn more about city resources available to them. Since its inception, the program has graduated more than 1,000 participants.
