Movies Out This Weekend: 'Dunkirk,' 'Girls Trip,' 'Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets'

This weekend's new movies — more than most — are going to force you to suspend your disbelief. Why? Well for starters, pop star Harry Styles is making his film debut in "Dunkirk." That's right, One Direction fans. The British heartthrob is adding movies to his resume.

And playing across the hall? "Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets" starring model Cara Delevingne as a comic book-inspired hero trying to save mankind.

Meanwhile, Jada Pinkett Smith is off on a "Girls Trip" with Queen Latifah.

Is your mind exploding? Ours was too. But don't panic: Here's what to see and what to skip.

Opening This Weekend

"Dunkirk" — Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Harry Styles, directed by Christopher Nolan

Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" portrays the miraculous 1940 rescue mission that saved thousands of British, French and other Allied soldiers trapped on the beaches of France by Nazi troops. At its core, the film is about the chaos of war, not about the war itself. With outstanding ensemble cast, a powerful film score and an excellent direction, “Dunkirk” is visually thrilling and emotionally intense.

See it. The movie has minimal dialogue, so see it in IMAX to get the best experience.

Meet the “Flossy Posse” — four former college besties (Haddish, Pinkett Smith, Latifah and Hall) headed to New Orleans for a reunion. This "Girls Trip" obviously involves a lot of fun — after the friends iron out some lingering issues. Sound too familiar? It is. But the story is still heartfelt despite being a bit too bold at times.

See it. If this is what you're in the mood for this weekend, these ladies will win you over.

From Luc Besson, the director of "The Fifth Element" and "Lucy," comes this sci-fi adventure based on the classic graphic novel series "Valerian and Laureline." Set in the 28th century, special peace operatives Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) embark on a mission to an intergalactic city to fight sinister forces out to destroy mankind. The movie has a massive spectacle appeal that's reminiscent of "The Fifth Element."

See it. The visuals are wildly imaginative but expect the plot to be a bit disappointing.
