Movies Out This Weekend: 'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,' 'Chuck' And More
Liev Schreiber is New Jersey-born boxer Chuck Wepner, and Elle Fanning is a transgender teen. Find out what to see and what to skip.

Opening This Weekend

“3 Generations” — Elle Fanning, Naomi Watts, Susan Sarandon, directed by Gaby Dellal
A multi-generational family drama, “3 Generations” is a compelling story about Ray (Elle Fanning), a transgender teen eager to begin the female-to-male transition process. Grappling with this life-altering decision are Ray's mother (Naomi Watts) and grandmother (Susan Sarandon). Despite nuanced performances from the three actresses, “3 Generations” ultimately underwhelms — much of Ray’s story is disappointingly left unexplored.

“Chuck” chronicles the rise and fall of the New Jersey-born boxer Chuck Wepner (Liev Schreiber), a tale said to have inspired Sylvester Stallone to write the "Rocky" movies. At the heart of the biopic is Wepner’s boxing bout with a young Muhammad Ali in 1975 and the fame that follows, which costs him his marriage as well as his illustrious career.
See it. The magnificent performance of Schreiber makes “Chuck” immensely watchable.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" — Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, directed by James Gunn
The unlikely band of colorful space heroes from the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” reunites for another epic adventure — Peter Quill/Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Rocket Raccoon (voice of Bradley Cooper) and Groot (voice of Vin Diesel). James Gunn also returns to write and direct the sequel.
See it. Check out Patch’s full review of all the thrill and excitement.

“The Lovers”— Debra Winger, Tracy Letts, directed by Azazel Jacobs
“The Lovers” dives into the complicated yet lifeless marriage of middle-aged couple Mary (Debra Winger) and Michael (Tracy Letts), both of whom are having an extramarital affair. Writer-director Azazel Jacobs presents the narrative with shrewdness and humor. Winger is definitely back in top form after a 20-year absence from the big screen.
See it. The screenplay is not perfect, but it has more to offer than meets the eye.
