Movies Out This Weekend

โ€œOceanโ€™s 8โ€ โ€” Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, directed by Gary Ross

Sandra Bullock leads an all-star cast in โ€œOceanโ€™s 8,โ€ a spin-off of the "Ocean's" trilogy.

Directed by Gary Ross, the new female-centric film centers around Debbie Ocean (Bullock), the estranged sister of George Clooneyโ€™s Danny Ocean who, along with a cohort of specialists, tries to steal a $150 million Cartier diamond necklace from the Met Gala in New York City.

See it. Like many heist movies, the screenplay languishes at times, with plot holes, inconceivable twists and complications. However overall, "Ocean's 8" will steal your hearts โ€” and that's the real heist in the movie.

โ€œHotel Artemisโ€ โ€” Jodi Foster, Sofia Boutella, directed by Drew Pearce

It is 2028, and Los Angeles has become a land of lawlessness and riots. Amidst this chaos is Hotel Artemis, a secret emergency hospital catering to criminals requiring medical assistance.

One night when the โ€œhotel" is at full capacity, the nurse (Jodi Foster) and her assistant orderly, Everest (Dave Bautista), must deal with erratic guests, known only by the names of the suites they occupy.

Among them are glamorous assassin Nice (Sofia Boutella), cocky arms dealer Acapulco (Charlie Day), fugitive brothers Waikiki (Sterling K. Brown) and Honolulu (Brian Tyree Henry), along with the hotelโ€™s owner The Wolfking (Jeff Goldblum).

When one mysterious guest (Jenny Slate) turns up from the nurse's past, her presence becomes unsettling, to say the least.

See it. While Drew Pearceโ€™s feature directorial debut meanders at times, it is gritty, irresistible and entertaining.

Watch the trailer:

โ€œHereditaryโ€ โ€” Toni Collette, Milly Shapiro, directed by Ari Aster

In writer-director Ari Asterโ€™s debut feature, Toni Collette and Gabriel Byrne star as a married couple whose family battles a terrifying curse.

At first glance, the Grahams โ€” Annie (Colette) and Steve (Byrne) with their two young childrenโ€” are an ordinary family grieving the death of Annieโ€™s mysterious mother. However, as their story unfolds, more revelations come to light about the sinister legacy of their ancestry. Can the Grahams survive the secrets of their past? And can Annie finally deal with her repressed memories and emotions?

See it. Aster has crafted a clever chiller that will surprise, terrify and enthrall audiences. Plus, Colletteโ€™s take on her formidable and deranged character is outstanding. Be forewarned: โ€œHereditaryโ€ is not a horror movie for the faint-hearted!

Watch the trailer:

โ€œWonโ€™t You Be My Neighbor?โ€ โ€” Joanne Rogers, directed by Morgan Neville

Documentarian Morgan Nevilleโ€™s latest film takes an in-depth, intimate look at the life and legacy of Fred Rogers. Poignant and powerful to the core, this tender tribute centers on the humanistโ€™s message of love, empathy, and compassion.

See it. Itโ€™s not at all preachy โ€” It just reminds us about the beauty and power of love in our lives. Bring a box of Kleenex.
