Public Hearings To Tackle School Safety After Classroom Shooting
A hearing in Hollywood Sunday will kick off a series of panels exploring school safety in LA following a February middle school shooting.
LOS ANGELES, CA — City Attorney Mike Feuer announced Wednesday that he will hold the first in a series of public hearings of the Los Angeles School Safety Blue Ribbon Panel on Sunday at Hollywood High School.
Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education Vice President Nick Melvoin will co-host the 2 p.m. meeting, which will be focused on a variety of topics related to school safety.
"Keeping our kids safe and secure should be our top priority," Feuer said. "Our blue ribbon panel will be traveling across our city to hear from students, parents, teachers, administrators and experts, taking a comprehensive look at LAUSD's extensive school safety efforts and examining ways to further enhance safety on campuses and in surrounding neighborhoods."

The panel was formed by Feuer in response to a Feb. 1 incident in which a gun brought to Salvador Castro Middle School by a 12-year-old girl accidentally discharged inside a classroom at the Westlake district campus, injuring two students, and the Feb. 14 shooting that killed 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida.
The panel plans to convene in each of the seven LAUSD districts and issue a final report this summer with recommendations for the district.

"As L.A. Unified works to educate the kids of Los Angeles in a secure and academic school environment, I appreciate the city attorney's commitment to the type of city, expert and community collaboration that I have called for," Melvoin said. "We must strengthen our ability to protect our kids from the threat of gun violence inside and outside of the walls of our school buildings; that effort takes everyone in our community."
