Rock-Throwing Man Holed Up In Bizarre Standoff
A man suspected of throwing rocks from a window barricaded himself in an apartment surrounded by police Thursday.
HOLLYWOOD, CA — A man was arrested Thursday after threatening people with a pole and then barricading himself in an apartment in the East Hollywood area, according to police.
Officers went to the 1200 block of New Hampshire Avenue about 10 a.m. on reports the man was throwing rocks from a window, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
Police described the man as mentally ill and said he had been threatening people with a metal pole and threw objects at responding officers.

"He barricaded himself inside his apartment and started to light things on fire inside the apartment," LAPD Officer Lenny Davis said.
The building and surrounding area were evacuated and police SWAT and firefighters responded, he said.

"Tear gas was deployed and the suspect was taken into custody (about 1 p.m.)," Davis said.
