Sassafras Set to Open Friday

The new Savannah-inspired bar serves up root-based cocktails.

Sassafras, which makes its public debut Friday, is a delightful piece of the south, right here in Hollywood.

It belongs to the 1933 group and to complete their vision, they took parts of a Savannah townhouse and reconstructed it in Los Angeles.

There's a living room, a porch complete with hanging moss, a conveyer of bottles suspended over the bartender, a taxidermied bear and other quirky decor touches.

During a preview, Patch snapped some photos and sampled some of their root-inspired drink menu featuring homemade ginger beer and barrel aged cocktails.

Try their signature Sassafras Royale, Pimm's or Cobbler. Drinks range from $11-$13. A sample of small bites included jambalaya, country peppers with braised collards as well as cheesy grits and shrimp. Bites are priced at $5-10.

During Wednesday night's preview, The Dustbowl Revival, a collective of musicians played some Southern roots mixed with jazz and bluegrass.

A space above the main room, which is really a balcony, is perfect for live music setups. Expect to hear performances on weekends.

Overlooking the modern fashion choices of bar goers, the scene is like a snapshot back in time. It's something you have to experience yourself!

Sassafras is at 1233 N. Vine St., near Fountain Avenue. Open 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. daily.
