- Oil spill update: While the worst is over and the hunt for those responsible has begun, the wildlife is still recuperating. The counts show that 32 live oiled birds and 78 dead oiled birds were recovered. Nineteen live birds were treated and released. Brandt’s cormorants had the highest mortality rates, followed by Western gulls and Eared grebes. Those that had the best survival rates were Western grebes, Snowy plovers, and sanderlings. “As far as mammals, three sea lions and one bottlenose dolphin were found dead. One oiled dolphin was found alive.” (Malibu Times)
- Exer Urgent Care opened its first Orange County location on Wednesday. Now in HB, patients can visit the facility at 7211 Warner Avenue. Its hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week. The facility accepts “most PPO, some HMO and Medicare, and offers affordable payment options for those with minimal or no health insurance.” (KSNB)
- The City of HB warns residents to inspect their citrus trees for Huanglongbing and the Asian citrus psyllid every month. If you find any, contact 800-491-1899. Because “trained teams of entomologists are releasing Tamarixia onto citrus trees in some residential areas of Southern California at no cost to residents,” find out if you are eligible to participate in this type of biological control. - Long Beach has Justin Rudd, but Huntington Beach has Phil. He is a long-time volunteer who is dedicating time and energy to the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). CERT teaches residents how to take care of themselves and their families during emergencies such as earthquakes. “If you can take care of yourself, your family and your immediate neighbors, that’s 3, 6, 10 people that first responders don’t have to deal with,” he says. (California Volunteers)
- The California Wine Festival is coming to the Paséa Hotel & Spa. It will go on next Friday and Saturday. Wineries in attendance include Locatelli and Golden Coast Mead. Park at the hotel, Pacific City, or Pier Plaza. (Surf City USA)
