Here are the top five stories in Huntington Beach today:

  1. What do you want the Edison Park makeover to look like? As of Thursday, the City is requesting more input from residents. Past input has led to some changes to the ways the City is thinking of handling the improvement. Now, you can comment on new outdoor exercise stations, basketball courts, parking lot reconfiguration, and soccer overlays. (Surf City Break)
  2. On Wednesday, we reported on the Talbert Channel service road project. On Friday, Mayor Barbara Delgleize went on record considering it “an opportunity to activate and make use of unused space.” She considers the space “an underutilized path, currently only desirable to a few.” The Mayor urges residents to participate in the online survey and be heard. Responses to her post have been critical of the plan. (FB)
  3. The City announced Friday that it was aware of the Dominguez Channel sewage spill. About four to seven million gallons of untreated sewage were released into the Channel and ultimately in the Los Angeles Port. In L.A. County, beaches were closed. In Orange County, the Health Care Agency closed Seal Beach. “At this time, OCHCA has not issued any closure announcements for Sunset Beach or Huntington Beach.” However, there is a rain advisory in place, which means that swimmers should stay out of the water for the next three days. (Surf City Break)
  4. On Wednesday, the District Court of Appeal agreed with OC District Attorney Todd Spitzer, who considers defendants in DUI cases ineligible for misdemeanor diversion. Spitzer noted that the OC is dealing with a DUI crisis. “Driving under the influence of drugs rose more than 40 percent and felony driving under the influence filings increased 25 percent during the pandemic,” he said. This clarifies the application of AB 3234 (Ting), which Governor Newsom signed into law. (HB News)
  5. The Governor included Orange County when issuing a State of Emergency on Thursday. This declaration comes in the aftermath of recent storms that led to flooding and called for cleanup crews to deal with fallen trees and power outages. The county is now able to benefit from “access to multiple state resources under the California Disaster Assistance Act.” (CBS)
