  1. Oil Spill Update: The Mediterranean Shipping Company is now one of the parties of interest. The Coast Guard believes that it has found a vessel, MSC DANIT, it “determined to be the source of an offshore pipeline leak.” The alleged anchor dragging could have taken place in January. (Fox)
  2. Mayor Kim Carr and Council member Natalie Moser are calling for a permanent ban on new offshore oil drilling. Arguing that the oil platforms and related technology are aging, they want the City Council to go along. Pointing to the move toward renewable energy over the past three decades, Mayor Carr suggested, “now it’s time to move forward and move in a new direction.” (L.A. Times/pay wall)
  3. The City Manager reminds residents to participate in the Great Shake Out earthquake drill on October 21. Considering that almost everyone around here is living on fault lines, it’s not a matter of if but when the next one hits. Learn to protect yourself during an earthquake and what to do afterward. (City Manager)
  4. The Scripps Institution of Oceanography is keeping a close eye on water quality around San Diego. Of particular interest is the water around the ocean water intake system off the Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier.
