Here are the top stories today in Huntington Beach:
- On Monday, the Marine View Middle School at 5682 Tilburg Drive will host a ribbon-cutting. After investing $26 million in modernization, “the new facilities support Marine View’s comprehensive Visual and Performing Arts program and an exciting array of electives, including Industrial Technology, 3-D Printing, Robotics, Woodshop, Art, Dance, Band, Concert Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Drama, Music, Guitar, Spanish, Leadership, and more.” The school is part of the Ocean View School District. (OC Breeze)
- The HB City Council will meet Tuesday. One of the items on the agenda is the purchase of two “Tesla Model Y electric vehicles for addition to the Police Department fleet.” Also, the mayor would like to create a Chief of Staff position, while the mayor pro tem wants to “draft an ordinance to prohibit the unlawful possession of catalytic converters.” Council members Kalmick and Moser want “a citywide assessment to identify a list of qualifying streets that are recommended for speed limit reductions.” (HB Legistar)
- The Newport Beach PD alerted OC residents on Friday to a new phone scam. Scammers contact residents with a caller ID that “looked like they were Newport Beach Police Department phone numbers.” The caller then requests address and personal information. Don’t give it to them! (Patch)
- Michelle Steel, who represents HB in California’s 48th congressional district, weighed in Saturday on the proposed port queuing procedures. She noted that the new system, requiring “cargo ships traveling eastbound to remain 150 miles west of Southern California, and northbound and southbound ships to remain more than 50 miles from California and Mexico,” mirrors legislation she introduced in October. In the meantime, the new rules developed “by the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, Pacific Maritime Association, and Marine Exchange of Southern California” take effect on Tuesday. (OC Breeze)
- Some residents in apartment buildings have noticed a new trash can for organic waste, which includes grass clippings, food-soiled paper, food leftovers. This is the gradual implementation of SB 1383, which goes into full effect in 2022. It requires “every jurisdiction to provide organic waste collection services to all residents and businesses.” (Cal Recycle)
