Hey Huntington Beach neighbors! As you may know, Amazon Web Services experienced an outage on Tuesday that affected the Huntington Beach Daily. Some of you might have received a late newsletter on Wednesday, or no newsletter at all. Please know this was unfortunately beyond our control, but know that we are fully back in business! — Sylvia

We have a new mayor! Also, Yale Chiang is handing out FREE beverages just because. Finally, here’s what you need to know about Comet Leonard.

  1. Mayor Pro Temp Barbara Delgleize, whose term expires in 2022, will serve as Mayor in 2022. The HB City Council appointed her on Tuesday. Mike Posey was appointed Mayor Pro Temp. “I am committed to doing my part to bring everyone together, so we can best serve the people of Huntington Beach,” the new mayor stated. (City of HB)
  2. A shoutout to Yale Chiang! The retired engineer set up a food cart on the HB Pier last Friday. There, he served people FREE coffee, tea, and hot chocolate. Nope, he didn’t ask for donations and didn’t take any money. “It’s his way of giving back.” You may find him there on Mondays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (HB News)
  3. Keep watching the eastern skies! Comet Leonard is supposed to make an appearance over HB on Sunday; however, you might be able to see it in the evenings leading up to the day and those after it, too. Pro-tip: Go to an area with little light pollution at night and bring your binoculars. Astronomers anticipate it to be closest to Earth on Sunday at 7:54 a.m. This comet is said to have been traveling the solar system for 35,000 year. (Patch)
  4. On November 24, Apartment Guide released the “State of the Rental Market.” Rent prices are up across the nation, but in CA they’re on fire. The average rent for a one-bedroom in the state is $2,616. Last year, it was $2,100. HB has seen a 39.6% increase in one-bedroom rent prices year-over-year. (Apartment Guide)
  5. On Wednesday, we learned that the 9th Annual Health and Beauty Expo is scheduled for January 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Visit the Hyatt Regency HB at 21500 PCH and connect with Merz Aesthetics. There will be prizes, swag bags, demonstrations, and photo ops. (Local Magazine)
