  1. The oil spill that was just rumored Saturday has, in fact, closed down the airshow. Beachfront areas running from the HB Pier to Newport Beach are closed. At this point, it appears that the 126,000 gallons of oil came from a “pipeline leak connected to an offshore oil platform known as Elly.” So far affected are the Talbert Marsh and the Wetlands. There are already “reports of fish and birds washing up dead on the shore.” (KTLA)
  2. If you encounter wildlife covered in oil, do not approach or touch the animals. Instead, call the Oiled Wildlife Care Network at 1-877-823-6926. If you encounter oiled marine life such as sea lions, connect with the Pacific Marine Mammal Center at 949-494-3050. At this point, the “spill is 5.8 nautical miles long.” (South OC Beaches)
  3. Wildlife in the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is also affected by the oil spill. Huntington Beach Mayor Kim Carr calls the event a “potential ecologic disaster.” Rep. Michelle Steel, R-Huntington Beach, has asked President Joe Biden for a “major disaster declaration for Orange County.” “Health officials warned people not to swim, surf or exercise by the beach because of the potential health hazards. People were also urged not to fish in the area since the waters are considered toxic.” (WeHoville)
  4. If you want to help the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, there is a list of items needed. They include nitrile gloves in all sizes, N95 masks, Tyvek suits, feedings syringes in 60 cc, 120 cc, and 240 cc, small red rubber feeding tubes, and collapsible plastic or cardboard animal carrying cases. Visit the organization online for the address. (@Huntbeachcj)
  5. Assist the HBPD in raising breast cancer awareness. Officers will wear pink patches and there are special patrol car door wraps. The PD will sell pink patch merchandise to raise funds for the cause. (HBPoliceDept)
