- Poseidon Water Update: As you know, the proposed desalination plant is a thorn in the side of environmentalists, who are a thorn in the side of the plan’s supporters. The California Coastal Commissioners will end the protesting and bickering by voting on the facility later in the year or early next year. While it seemed certain that the Commission would issue the permit, it has now “raised concerns about the proposed facility if another spill happens.” In the meantime, Poseidon wants it known that it won’t pay “regulators the required $326,623” application fee until a permit is drafted and recommended for approval.” Say what? (Voice of OC)
- Oil Spill Update: The Coast Guard and others boarded the MSC DANIT in the Long Beach Port, because they believe it dragged its anchor in rough seas in January. The vessel is registered in Panama. MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company with headquarters in Switzerland operates it. The owner is Dordellas Finance Corporation. None of them have commented. (Fox)
- There’s some information how the Coast Community College District, of which Golden West College in Huntington Beach is a part, will implement the district-wide vaccine mandate in 2022. “The District is asking that all students who do not have a medical, religious or personal exemption receive the COVID-19 vaccine. Students who are not vaccinated must take a weekly COVID-19 test.” To track everyone, the district intends to use Cleared4, which is an app and website. (Coast Report Online)
- In 2019, ten people “without fixed abode” died in Orange County. Last year, the number went up to 32. This September alone, 30 people died. They include Sophia A., Joseph S., and Timothy P. from Huntington Beach. (Fr. Dennis Kriz, OSM)
