- Desalination Plant Update: Poseidon and HB neighborhood groups have gone the rounds over the proposed desalination plant. The recent oil spill possibly identified some weaknesses in the way to build the facility as planned. The proponents of the facility believe they have a found a way to overcome local resistance: a statewide ballot measure. On Thursday, ballot measure proponents objected to this step’s being called “secondary advocacy.” If it goes through, look for it on the November 2022 ballot. (Voice of OC)
- The HB City School District has updated its COVID-19 dashboard. As of Monday, there have been eight confirmed cases of COVID-19 across nine campuses, involving 5,513 students and staff members. This makes the positivity rate 0.145%. The Huntington Beach Union High School District reports that there are zero confirmed cases among staff members and ten among students. (HBCSD, HBUHSD)
- On Monday, insiders exposed another facet of how the HB oil spill is affecting residents: property values. Calling it a “hidden impact,” experts worry that the effects of the oil spill will “undermine markets well beyond the 70 miles of Orange and San Diego coastline.” Will real estate professionals have to draw up “Unique Factors and Conditions Affecting Property forms” soon? (First Tuesday Journal)
- The Center for Biological Diversity announced Tuesday that it intends to sue the federal government for “failure to review and update plans for platforms off the coast.” It is using the HB oil spill as the jumping off point for the court action. Environmentalists suggest that the government is not supposed to “just continue on with these really old development and production plans” but should review and revise them “in response to changing conditions or activities.” (AP via Binghamton Homepage)
