  1. The Old World German Restaurant is located at 7561 Center Avenue. In 2019, an underground transformer exploded and injured several people. On Nov. 5, the HB restaurant's owner came to a conditional “settlement with Southern California Edison Co. and General Electric Co.” The suit alleged “years of shoddy maintenance, cursory and ineffective visual inspections and a refusal to upgrade aging equipment, practices that reflect SCE’s company-wide policy of placing profits over public safety.” (My News L.A.)
  2. If you need to clear out your closet before the gift exchanges this December, consider heading to 5 Points Plaza on Friday. Between noon and 4 p.m., the retailers host a clothing drive for children and pets. The organizations that will receive donations consisting of “gently used coats, gloves and hats” are “Stand Up for Kids, the Orangewood Foundation and the OC Humane Society.” (Locale Magazine)
  3. Depending on the strength of the high winds that are going through the region, you might be eating your Thanksgiving meal by candlelight. On Tuesday, we learned that SCE could cut off electricity to 98,705 SoCal customers. Within the OC, there could be 8,571 affected customers in “Rancho Santa Margarita, Mission Viejo, Trabuco Canyon and Silverado.” Shutting off the power is supposed to prevent potentially downed power lines from sparking wildfires. (Patch)
  4. As of Monday, OC Supervisor Katrina Foley “distributed more than $1.8 million in grants to cities and nonprofits, to help with holiday meal boxes and food pantries.” The City of Huntington Beach received $200,000. On Monday, she also began the 13th annual kids’ coat drive. If you want to participate, you can drop off “new coats only” at the HB Senior Center. (OC Breeze)
  5. Pain at the pump is keeping people home this year. A Monday report noted that only 32% of Americans intend to travel for Thanksgiving. This is down 3% from last year and a far cry from the 65% who wanted to travel in 2019. Gasoline is at a seven-year high -- but so is Americans’ unwillingness to let COVID get in the way of their holiday plans. Surveys show that 75% of Americans won't let the virus mar their planned celebrations, which is up from 46% in 2020. (HB News)
