- Does your home back to the Talbert Channel between Magnolia and Bushard? The City is currently looking for input on a “potential project to improve an existing service road . . . for use as a public multi-use path for bicyclists and pedestrians.” The idea is for the road to connect with the Santa Ana River Trail. Proponents believe this project would lead to a “safer and more direct way for residents of HB to bike, walk or ride other non-motorized vehicles to access the beach, schools, parks and other amenities.” Opponents argue that it exposes the backs of homes to potential burglars, vandals, or people experiencing homelessness. (HB Trails to the Sea)
- The HBPD has rescheduled its DUI and Driver’s License Checkpoint. An official announcement explained that the checkpoint will now take place on Wednesday, January 5. It will run from 6 PM to 3 AM. “Officers will be looking for signs of alcohol and/or drug impairment, as well as checking for proper licensing.” (HBPD)
- The Point In Time event is looking for volunteers. Openings include Field Surveyor Team Captains, Field Surveyors, and Set-Up Volunteers. Target dates are January 25, 26, and 27. This event is the annual “unsheltered count . . . facilitated by the contracted nonprofit organization, City Net.” (Everyone Counts)
- If you were planning to take your vehicle on the Balboa Island ferry after Monday, you’ll have to wait a month. The ferry “will not be able to carry cars for about a month.” We learned Wednesday that the utility undergrounding project approved in 2018 is now happening. Pedestrians and cyclists can continue using the ferry. (OC Register)
- The HBPL Literacy Volunteers announced Tuesday that they will host their first-ever Wine & Words Virtual Event. Author Kaira Rouda will be on hand for this January 22 event. In addition to hearing about Rouda’s latest novel, there will be an auction at the end of the event. (HBN)
