- The oil spill aftermath poses questions. Who knew what and when? For example, there’s information that the Coast Guard got numerous reports of a possible oil spill “earlier than previously disclosed and asked local authorities to investigate about 15 hours before its own personnel confirmed a large oil slick.” There’s a big difference between 5:30 p.m. on October 1 and 9 a.m. on October 2. Huntington Beach Mayor Kim Carr said it's not clear that earlier notice would have made a difference. “An investigation should have immediately taken place, and it could have significantly reduced the size of the spill,” counters Miyoko Sakashita, an attorney with the Center for Biological Diversity. (NBC)
- Caltrans has big plans for the stretch of SR-1 that runs from the Santa Ana River Bridge to Anderson Street in HB. Officials propose building Class II bike lanes in both directions. They also want to include widened right-turn pockets, adding bicyclist detection sensors at intersection signals, and “removing existing sand deposits along the roadway; installing a concrete center median barrier.” Residents are invited to comment. The goal is to approve the project by spring 2022, start construction in 2025, and finish in spring 2026. (Caltrans)
- The Ocean View School District Measure R Bond Citizens’ Oversight Committee is looking for active members. Interested residents need to apply by November 5. Meetings will take place at 17200 Pinehurst Lane in HB. Currently, scheduled meetings will be January 31, 2022, and May 2, 2022. (OVSD)
- How is Huntington Beach stacking up with the YIMBYs (Yes in My Backyard)? Is the City living up to the requirement of having more low and mid-income housing? Huntington Beach is named as a wealthier city wanting to block housing “at all costs.” This earned the city the moniker of being “the real enemy.” (CalMatters).
