A company thatΒ plans to convert two warehouses into a commercial space andΒ rest stop for Bayshore Bikeway cyclistsΒ may make one of the two buildings into a boutique hotel, project manager Terry McCaleb told San Diego Daily TranscriptΒ Wednesday.Β
The California Coastal Commission approved a permit for the projectΒ at a meeting in Long Beach June 12. The application specifically requests approval of a 50-bed hostel.
βAs long as we donβt make any drastic changes and follow zoning, we wonβt have to go back to the Coastal Commission,β McCaleb told San Diego Daily Transcript.
McCaleb told IB Patch earlier this monthΒ that owner of the propertyΒ Bikeway Village LLC would need $1 million set aside by Hotel del CoronadoΒ in order to build the hostel.Β
In order to qualify for an expansion, in 2010Β the Coastal Commission required Hotel del Coronado provide fundsΒ for affordable overnightΒ accommodationsΒ in San Diego'sΒ South Bay.
Construction of the project could begin within the next year depending on the length of the permit process with the City of Imperial Beach, McCaleb said.Β
The project will be built in two phases, starting with a community room,Β deck andΒ space for businesses like a coffee shop,Β bike shop or office space. A hotel or hostel would be built as part of the second phase of the project, he said.
Bikeway Village LLC is owned by Rex Butler of Coronado.
