150 years ago today President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address after being asked to share some words following the bloodiest battle of the Civil War.
Historians believe the Gettysburg Address was less than 300 words, took three minutes or less to deliver and one of the best in American history.
In the speech Lincoln called on the nation to recommit itself "to a new birth of freedom."Â
The war contested whether a nation founded based on ideals like freedom and equality, rights guaranteed by the constitution, "shall not perish from the Earth."
Lincoln called for a dedication to the spirit of the constitution that challenges Americans to strive for "a more perfect union."Â
How do you think America can strive toward a more perfect union today? How do you think Imperial Beach can improve? Share in comments.
