IMPERIAL BEACH, CA — The phenomenon of bioluminescence is once again showing up at beaches along the San Diego coastline, including Imperial Beach.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration describes bioluminescence as the production and emission of light by a living organism.
"If you’ve ever seen a firefly, you have encountered a bioluminescent organism," the NOAA says. "In the ocean, bioluminescence is not as rare as you might think. In fact, most types of animals, from bacteria to sharks, include some bioluminescent members."

Whatever it is, it tends to reappear every few years and it sure makes the ocean waves turn a beautiful bright blue at night.
We started catching the event in October and it has continued into November at Imperial Beach, most recently Monday night.
