Update: 2 Burned in Explosion at Sport Chalet

Updated 12:10 p.m. Customer Suzanne Herzfeld was in the store when the explosion happened.

Herzfield was shopping for a jacket when authorities arrived and instructed everyone to leave. 

"I didn't even smell anything … I smelled more when I came out. The Sheriff came in and told everyone to evacuate. There wasn't a big, ball-like explosion I could feel."

Updated 11:06 a.m.: A natural gas explosion burned two Sport Chalet employees Friday morning, Los Angeles County fire officials said.

"We have a preliminary assessment of a natural gas explosion,'' said Capt. Al Yanagisawa. 

A contractor doing maintenance in a utility room smelled gas, so he alerted store management, said Assistant Fire Chief Greg Hisel. Two employees were sent in to shut down the gas line, after which something sparked, Hisel said, calling it a "flash explosion.'' 

They were taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital with "moderate injuries,'' he said. 

Yanagisawa added there was no fire, and the building incurred minimal damage. 

Earlier: An explosion at Sport Chalet injured two people Friday morning, sending both to the hospital, according to Sgt. Burton Brink of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff's Station.

Authorities responded at 9:59 a.m., Brink said. It is unclear what caused the explosion, nor how extensive it was, he added. 

"I don't know the extent of the incident but I'm assuming it's pretty contained because only two people were injured,'' he said.
