California Students Could Get Free Year Of Community College

Gov. Jerry Brown signed the California College Promise last week.

SACRAMENTO, CA -- Students looking to attend a community college could attend the first year for free.

Gov. Jerry Brown last week signed the California College Promise, which "if funded in the next state budget, would provide one year of free community college for new students," according to The Long Beach Post.

If funded by the state budget, the bill would cover any "tuition and fees for first-time students to attend any of the state’s 114 community colleges for one academic year."

The bill is in response to a growing shortage of college-educated workers in California, according to one of the bill's authors Assemblyman Miguel Santiago (D-Los Angeles).
