Gold Bricks in the Ocean, Yours for the Taking!
The Sport Chalet chain has once again hidden real booty (in the form of gift cards) off SoCal's beaches.
There's gold in them thar whitecaps!
The Sport Chalet sporting goods chain has once again placed golden bars in the frothy coastal waters of Southern California, there for the taking if you know how to SCUBA dive and can piece together some clues.
These bars—actually, T-bar weights painted gold—represent Sport Chalet gift cards worth between $1,000 and $5,000.

The treasure hunt started June 26. One bar is hidden in Northern California. Another was found just a few days ago in Arizona (SCUBA diving in Arizona? Do they even have water there?), but the remaining four are clearly off SoCal, judging from the clues released so far.

We can discern that two are in San Diego County—one of which seems to be somewhere in the vicinity of Cardiff-by-the-Sea, since one clue mentions that city's founder, Frank Cullen. Another clue refers to a "heavenly county," which could only be Los Angeles, and might point to a dive spot near the Ventura County line.
Another gold brick can only be immersed in Orange County waters, from the clues unveiled so far:
- "I'm hidden in water that weighs 8.55 lbs. per gallon."
That would be the weight of salt water, so the ocean ...
- "I'm located between Shamu and Mickey Mouse."
San Diego and Anaheim, obviously ...
- "I'm north of the place known for "Harboring the Good Life."
That would be the official slogan of the city of Dana Point ...
- "In 1871, a steamer named the Vaquero visited to trade; I'm hidden south of this lagoon."
This refers to how Newport Beach got its name, so, south of Newport and north of Dana Point brings us to the latest clue, which is ...
- "If you know Lauren Conrad, you're getting close."
Bingo! Laguna Beach!
But ... where, exactly? You'll just have to wait for more clues, which are released on the site every Tuesday and Thursday.
Happy hunting! And if you find one, be sure to let Patch know about it so we can make you famous!
