STATEWIDE ALERT: Blackouts Possible

A statewide alert has been issued by California's energy transmission manager; the alert is to continue through Sunday evening, putting Inland Empire residents on notice to tone down their air conditioner usages.

According to the ISO, higher than normal temperatures statewide are causing power usage to spike, placing a strain on the power grid. If usage is not curtailed, blackouts are possible. 

The so-called Flex Alert urges all Californians to reduce power usage and shift non-essential use until after 6:00 p.m. 

Three steps are recommended now by the Independent Systems Operator -- a not-for-profit public organization that independently operates California's wholesale power grid:

• Turn off all unnecessary lights, computers and appliances.
• Adjust your air conditioning thermostat to 78 degrees or higher.  Use a fan when possible.
• Postpone using major appliances and equipment until after 6:00 p.m. 

The Flex Alert comes as the mercury in the Inland Empire tops 100 degrees, with a high of 111 possible, forecasters say.
