RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — A Riverside County Sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man early Saturday when authorities responded to a call about a domestic dispute, authorities said.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department did not identify the man who was killed or the deputy who shot him.

The deputy will be placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, following department policy, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's department said the shooing happened when deputies from the Jurupa Valley sheriff's station responded at 3:48 a.m. Saturday to a call on the 3300 block of Avalon Street in Jurupa Valley.

The caller told authorities a man was using a knife to threaten a woman while multiple family members were in the home. The deputies were able to evacuate everyone from the home but the man refused to come out, authorities said.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau and the Crisis Negotiation Team responded, and after extensive negotiations, deputies in the special enforcement bureau went into the home and the man came out of a room armed with a knife, authorities said.

They gave the man multiple commands to surrender but he failed to comply and was shot, authorities said.

Deputies rendered medical aid but the man was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. There were no injuries to any of the deputies, they said.

An investigator from the Riverside County District Attorney’s Office who is assigned to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Force Investigations Detail will lead the investigation, the sheriff's office said.

"This is an active and ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Riverside County Senior District Attorney Investigator Eric Crosson or Riverside County Sheriff’s Sergeant Jarred Bishop at 951–955–2777," the sheriff's office said.
