Man Shot to Death Near Copper Creek Park

A 27-year-old man was shot to death near a park in Perris and investigators arrested a 46-year-old Mead Valley man in connection with the killing, authorities said Saturday.

Deputies responded about 11:45 p.m. Saturday to several reports of shots fired in the 1800 block of Cherrytree Avenue, near Copper Creek Park, and found the victim unresponsive suffering from a gunshot wound, according to Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Raymond Huskey, who said the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

He was identified as Abraham Mendoza of Perris, he said.

Detectives from the Sheriff's Central Homicide Unit identified a suspect, Hilario "Larry" Esquivel, and arrested him without incident in the Mead Valley area, Huskey said.

The shooting investigation is ongoing and anyone with information about the case was urged to contact the Central Homicide Unit at (951) 955-2777.
