Riverside Sheriff's Department Investigate Orange County Deputy Involved Shooting Of RivCo Man
The shooting occurred in a remote area off Holy Jim Trail on Santiago Peak.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA — A Perris man believed to be intoxicated and armed with a weapon was shot and killed by an off-duty deputy Friday in a remote area of Holy Jim Trail, officials say.
Details are still unfolding in the Friday shooting death of Augstin Vazquez Cavillo, 50, of Perris, according to Sgt. Jarrod Bishop of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Just after 8:15 p.m., Lake Mathews Sheriff’s Station deputies responded to Holy Jim Trail and Main Divide Road on Santiago Peak. There, they found the off-duty Orange County deputy, whose name was not released, and the body of Cavillo.

"Deputies determined that the off-duty deputy had been approached by an adult male, who appeared to be under the influence, and was armed with a firearm," Bishop said. "The deputy identified himself as a law enforcement officer and gave the male multiple verbal commands to raise his hands. The male refused to comply and subsequently removed his firearm from its holster, resulting in a shooting by the off-duty deputy."
Cavillo was pronounced deceased at the scene.
