Sunrun customers nationwide facing massive bills due to systemic design flaws and predatory contracts
Homeowners trapped in 20-year Power Purchase Agreements
I am writing to bring to your attention a widespread issue with Sunrun, a leading solar installer. Like countless others across the country, I am facing significant financial strain due to a solar energy system that consistently underperforms. This is not a maintenance issue; it's a systemic problem rooted in poor design processes and predatory consumer practices that I believe warrants a national investigation.
Sunrun is systematically signing homeowners into binding 25-year lease agreements for systems that are knowingly under-designed for their actual needs. When customers complain about the massive utility bills that follow, Sunrun denies responsibility and attempts to silence them with legally binding waivers in exchange for minimal "goodwill" credits. My case in Lake Elsinore, CA, perfectly illustrates these nationwide issues.
Fundamental Design Flaw: Sunrun's design team made a critical error by using an incorrect house model that did not feature a west-facing roof for my design analysis. This failure to account for my actual home's sun exposure resulted in a system that lacks afternoon solar production.
- Insufficient & Unbalanced Production: Sunrun installs solar systems designed to produce energy in a single, intense morning "burst," rather than a balanced flow throughout the day. This design strategy fails customers who need power in the afternoon and evening. This causes my battery to support the household usage due to the lack of production by the solar panels leaving the battery at a 20% charge when it comes to the evening time to back up my household in the event of an outage.
- Predatory "Final Offer": Sunrun acknowledged my complaint with a "final offer" of just $1,294.34 in credit/checks. This inadequate compensation was contingent on me signing a legal document containing a General Release of Liability and a Non-Disparagement waiver, effectively preventing me from speaking publicly about my experience or seeking further legal action.
- Systemic Consumer Complaints: This appears to be a company-wide strategy. The Better Business Bureau and online forums are filled with similar complaints regarding poor communication, unhelpful case managers, and designs that fail to deliver the promised savings.
- Exhausted All Avenues: I have attempted to resolve this directly with Sunrun since June 2025 (system activated March 27, 2025). Having reached an impasse, I have formally filed complaints with the BBB, CPUC, and CSLB.
I am seeking a fair resolution where Sunrun is held accountable for their design error.
