35 Years Ago, In A Galaxy Far, Far Away ... 'Star Tours' Was Born At Disneyland.
RX-24 may not be much of a pilot, but everyone of us wants to be a secret rebel spy.

ANAHEIM, CA — Disneyland Resort's premier Tomorrowland attraction, "Star Tours," turns 35 years old on Sunday. The fan-favorite attraction has transported Disney and "Star Wars" fans to galaxies far, far away since 1987, and the immersive experience has taken us to Endor, Tatooine and Hoth.
The ride opened 10 years after the release of the first "Star Wars" movie. Guests step through the gates and into an interstellar spaceport.

Inside, easter eggs abound. There's a chance to watch C-3PO and R2-D2 dish over a starship. Droids scan the crowd for safety measures. Over the years, more visuals have been incorporated, such as silhouettes of fellow travelers including Jawas, bounty hunter Boba Fett and even Darth Vader. If you're lucky, you may find a "hidden Mickey" or two.

"Star Tours" was the brainchild of Disneyland's finest "imagineers" working with George Lucas and his visual effects house, Industrial Light and Magic. The idea was simple: Allow guests to step inside the "Star Wars" story.
Since then, "Star Tours" has kept pace with each iteration of the feature films, adding scenes and immersive experiences to further draw us into the "Star Wars" universe.

At the 1987 grand opening of "Star Tours," Disneyland remained open for three days and nights in a solid 60-hour-party, accommodating guests who would wait in hourslong lines to board their ship and see what scenes would appear on the ever-changing attraction.

Princess Leia, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, Ewoks and Darth Vader joined Michael Eisner, then chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Co. Lucas and Mickey Mouse cut the ribbon with a lightsaber, furthering the magic.
In the beginning, we would cheer if we got to see Chewbacca's world of Kashyyyk. Years later, we would merely sigh when we had another chance to go podracing. By 2011, more scenes were added as more feature films offered new scenes and adventures to thrill guests.
"Star Tours" is forever a must-ride at the park for our family, even with the addition of "Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge" and "Rise of the Resistance."
