1976: Funds from Harlem Globetrotters Game to Go Toward Journalism Scholarships

According to the Spring Valley Bulletin, here's what was happening in Spring Valley, this week in 1976:

 

 – The public had one last chance to voice opinion over the proposal of the Valle De Oro Planning Group's move to become the area's guidline for planning growth. Postcards were sent out to residents informing them of the proposal, and to invite them to attend the meeting.  In 1972, the County Board of Supervisors approved Valle de Oro as an official planning group.

 – James Dee Anderson, reported to police that $30,000 in jewelry was missing from his car, after his 1976 red Cadillac convertible was returned to him from the repo lot after being towed. Anderson, who was arrested and had the car taken from him because of non-payment, claimed that several items were taken, including an attache case, several boxes, a $4,000 diamond ring, a $4,600 gold ring, $3,000 in men's and women's watches, another $4,600 men's gold watch, and $6,000 in cash.

 – The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) in San Diego was offering $3,500 in awards for journalism students. Eligible high school and college students in San Diego (including Spring Valley and Lemon Grove schools) will have their applications overlooked by a screening committee. There will be five $100 awards for community colleges; three $500 awards for four-year colleges; and a $1,000 award for high schools. Funds for the awards come from the annual presentation of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball games.
